No white marble columes here. Just gaudy and baudy tales of the Greeks as they really were.

A fine book , one of the series "hinges of History". Covering the heritage we in the West have received from the Classical Greeks including good chinks of our language, stories, music, art etc.etc. I hadn't thought of it but we would truly have a different world had Homer not been there and so many others including the Platos and Aristotles etc. In shot it ties us to our Greek Cultural history. That also includes the "Christian" heritage much of which was Greek not Jewish.

The book is full of whimsical characterizations, such as the depiction of Socrates as a "squat, ugly, barefoot man who did not bathe too often." The author includes generous portions of the original writings in order to provide the flavor of the Greek way. Once again, Cahill gracefully opens up a world that has provided so much of Western culture's characteristic way of thinking.
