Saint Thomas Aquinas : Philosophical Texts
Saint Thomas Aquinas Philosophical Texts Author:St Thomas Aquinas, Thomas Gilby (Translator) The importance of St. Thomas Aquinas as a philosopher is admitted by many who do not accept his theological position, as well as those who do. 'He proposed no party-line,' says Father Gilby, 'but a perennial philosophy, full of grandeur and common sense. His confidence in the harmony of faith and reason never let him to halt rational investigati... more »on, still less to tamper with evidence.' This selection deals with his philosophy : his view of God, creation, the material world, the human intellect, ethics, aesthetics, etc., as far as he considered them accessible to unaided reason, matters of revelation being excluded.
Though St. Thomas composed his own Summa in impressively logical order, some of his important and thought-provoking declarations on philosophical matters are found elsewhere. In this selection all his work is drawn on. The texts themselves are arranged according to the order of subjects in his final systematic work, the Summa Theologica, though many are from other places, and have not hitherto been translated into English.
The selector and translator of the texts in this volume, Thomas Gilby, is an English Dominican Friar. This volume was first published in 1951, and reprinted as a Galaxy Book in 1960.« less
