This is short stories for kids. It is a Scholastic book and was from a book club, so it might be novel. The stories seem to be written at about 2nd or 3rd grade level (looking informally). Fun stories.

There's a funny little guy--he might be a gnome--who's trying to take over the Bailey School Kid's favortite tree in this brand -new story. And there's a new slide at school, one that Horrible Harry really wants to try--but the playground won't be oen for ages. This is one collection you won't want to miss.
