The premise of this book is compelling--that political freedom fosters the development of science, and looping back, the development of science fosters the growth of progressive ideas.

Most of this premise is developed in the first quarter of the book. The remainder is a dissertation on the history of science as it aligns with historical developments. This, I presume, would be much more interesting to a student of political and philosophical history than to a student of science. Accordingly, the book missed the mark for me, although I did pick up lots of little trivia from the text.
