Pretty good book. Tian and her family are detained in an isolated jungle camp when the Japanese invade China at the outset of WWII. This book is about their life there, their eventual escape, and how their lives go after that.

A very grim but very well written book that is wholly original. I read it in one day honestly because I couldn't put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next to the main characters. This is the 2nd novel recently I've read that was grim with torture and bad things (the other being 'A Little Life') both of which received notice for originality and ability to really delve into the characters and both which were outstanding books, but it's so hard to say to a friend 'hey read this really grim but great book'--
