I admit that I was first drawn to this book having had Shelties for many years. But this is much more than just that.
Based on a real-life Sheltie, Seamus to the Rescue! is the third in the Seamus series of childrens books. A collection of stories, the events and situations are told from the viewpoint of Seamus and his animal friends.
This book could be read alone by a grade-school child, or it could be read by an adult with a child. The animals speak in a simple, clipped manner. The author refers to this as Seamus-Speak, and includes a glossary for understanding the animals speech.
Black and white illustrations depict the situations in each chapter. In addition, there is a section with actual photos of the real Seamus, and the authors family.
An appendix gives a synopsis and discussion guide for each chapter. Included in the guides are the morals and values stressed and suggested questions for discussions.
James Beverly is degreed in childrens clinical psychology. He worked a lifetime with children and families. He is a parent and a grandparent. Now retired, James and Seamus plan to use their time on more adventures. There is a Seamus Fan club which offers many Seamus items, as well.
I wholeheartedly recommend Seamus to kids and their families,
to read together, especially.

The stories of these adventures are fictional and based on the authors dog, Seamus the Sheltie. Seamus speaks a little differently than you and me. He and most of the animals in the story have a child like speech that only when talking to each other and is understandable to them. Seamus goes on many adventures saving or teaching the other animals lessons in being nice to each other.
The stories are sweet. Especially any of the stories that feature a little puppy that need Seamus help or comfort.
Sometimes the way the animal speak to each other, in a babyish talk, does confuse the brain.
I wasnt a fan of the speech. The author does explain in detail why Seamus and the animals talk to each other way they do. It is (what I think) suppose to be really cute fails as you continually read some of the repetitive sentences.
All that being said I still did enjoy the stories and could feel the warmth that Seamus spreads. I think children will enjoy Seamus adventures.

Seamus is a Shetland sheepdog with a friendly wisdom to share with his neighborhoods animal kingdom, and he does just that in the series of tales told in Seamus the Sheltie to the Rescue!. In this enjoyable, insightful collection, Seamus helps a little family of mice find their way home in the winter; a few puppies with their issues of car sickness, abandonment and premature adventure-seeking; a family of birds with a egg-eating possum problem; and many more. Each tale teaches morals that even a few adults could learn from, and theyre a delight to read aloud with Seamuss own disjointed version of the English language called Seamus-Speak. The book also includes discussion guides for each chapter, to help youngsters struggling with the characters reactions or intentions, and an appendix of translations of the aforementioned Seamus-Speak, which isnt limited to Seamus, but the entire animal cast, save a wise, situation-defusing crow. Based on a real-life dog, Seamus is a beautiful reflection of the loving nature of dogs and an easy read providing life lessons for all ages.
