OK.  I know this is a silly question, but I need the answer anyway...in the simplist of terms as I am a bit of a tech dummy.  Just ask the PBS member who had to PM me a step by step guide for sideloading books to my Kindle.

Anyway,  I have made several puchases from Fictionwise (when the discount codes are really good) and I have always purchased the multi-format books.  But there are several books on the site that are in the "secure e-reader" format only.  I noticed the codes do work on these books (because I accidentally put one in my cart) and I would be able to get them for much cheaper than I can elsewhere if I could download them from FW.  The books that I'm interested in tend to be the more expensive ones (like $10+) and I just can't rationalize spending that much money on a book I can only read on my computer (something I absolutely hate to do due to eye strain)

Is it possible to get the secure e-reader format, remove the DRM through calibre, and put them on my Kindle?  Or am I just dreaming and should put those titles out of my head, lol.

i tried to go through that one time, and couldn't make heads or tails out of how i might get "secure eReader" books from fictionwise into Calibre so i could get them on my Kindle.  it has its own ereader software for your PC and does not use ADE (or if it uses it 'underneath' i didn't see that info), and in all the various searching i did i couldn't find anything that would remove the DRM from that format.  i'd buy more books from them with those great coupons if i could get them in the format i need!

ereader.com, which is where you'd get the software, has in the top corner it's A Barnes & Noble Company.  also, from what i remember the DRM uses your credit card info, which i wouldn't like anyway, but if you switch cards and then need to re-download you're SOL or you have to keep your former credit card info around just in case.  eww.

if someone knows how to do this, i'd definitely be interested in hearing as well just out of curiosity.

Are they secure EPUBS like you'd get from the Barnes & Noble site?  I've successfully used Calibre to strip the DRM from those.  If I remember correctly, it does require putting your CC number into the Plugin to get it to work.  Although, on Fictionwise, I always use Paypal to pay so maybe that wouldn't work.

If anyone spots a really cheap Secure ebook on Fictionwise, I'd be willing to buy it and see if I can't get it into Calibre.

So I read a bit more on the Fictionwise site about this format.  Sounds like an old ebook format.  They talk about putting it on your Palm series gadget and specifically mention the Palm M100.  I have one of those and it's like 12 years old.  I don't even think Palm is around anymore, didn't they get bought out years ago?

The FAQs about this format also mention needing your credit card number to re-download books, even if it's not a viable CC anymore.  Sounded really strange to me.

So I found a secure ereader format ebook for only a penny so I purchased it.  Downloaded the reader for it and installed it.  I can't even download the ebook until I put a valid credit card on file.  I tried with an old card of mine, changing the expiration date to something current, but it can tell it's not a valid credit card number anymore.  Not willing to put a vaild card on file to do it so thus ends my experiment with seucre ereader format.

Thanks for trying Sarah.  I knew there was probably not a way to do it, but I was really hoping to save some money.  Those books will just wait on my wish list for a while longer <<sigh>>

Like I said, there is a secure reader format book that's only one penny.  If you're willing to put a valid CC on file to download it, that'd be worth trying if you really want to experiment with stripping the DRM from it.
