I arrived at the by-invitation-only party, invitation in hand, wearing a rented tuxedo and mask to hide my true identity. I was a little uncomfortable, but liked the idea of being so secretive. Everyone else was similarly dressed and disguised - no one knew anyone by sight.
The invitations were specially marked and numbered to allow entrance to this grand gala. Where or how my friend managed to get hold of them I will never know, but I’m so glad I let my friend talk me into coming here. There is always that chance, that possibility of a once in a lifetime encounter while hiding behind the mask, concealing your true identity. You could be anyone - liar, lover, thief - no one would be the wiser.
While small groups were forming all around the room, I reached for a glass of red wine offered to me by a passing server, also in costume and mask. That’s when I spotted a little sweetness in the corner. She was like some exotic bird wrapped in blue with matching feathers entwined throughout her hair. Her sparkling eyes set my mind dreaming, as I could see through the mask and read her soul…
I could feel the endless possibilities within her deep blue eyes. Her mouth was colored a seductive red, just like cordial cherries. I imagined they would taste so sweet and delicious, soft and warm - I wanted to experience them immediately - but knew they would be worth waiting for.
I couldn't wait to see what would happen between us - so I steeled myself against the fear of rejection, and began planning my move as I tried to observe her without openly staring. I let my eyes take in the rest of her, and admired the way her velvet sapphire dress clung to her petite frame. My mind raced with first lines, clever phrases that would make her turn and look at me with a smile, perhaps a laugh, an invitation to go further, radiating by those incredible eyes.
The band was first class and playing music from across the generations. Standard 50's love songs, catchy synthesized tunes from the 80's, and romantic ballads from the current charts. Now the masquerade ball was hopping, with people recognizing the band's skill and requesting their favorite songs. The dance floor becomes an organized event, with couples spinning, dipping, and twisting.
As the night progressed, I couldn't help but find my eyes following her around the room. While chatting with the other people at the party, I could feel her eyes upon me, which made me feel as if the whole planet had stopped revolving. I knew right then that she could see-through me and straight into my soul. I made my way over to the bar to get another red wine, peeking out of the corner of my eye to find her studying me intently. I felt this was the perfect time to slip over to chat with her. Carefully moving through the crowded room, muttering "Excuse me, pardon me, and watch your feet...” I emerged from the crowd just in front of where she was seated, and promptly tripped over a chair leg, nearly splashing her with my glass of red wine. Mortified, I glanced up at her, certain she would have a disapproving frown on her face. I was amazed to see a mischievous little grin playing around those luscious lips as she held out her hand and said "Yes - I'd love to dance!", before I could even utter a word.
I reached down to interlace my fingers with hers. My hand lightly rested in the small of her back, guiding her over to the wooden dance floor. I can only hope she is enjoying the soft touch of my fingers and position of my other hand as much as I'm enjoying feeling the warmth of her skin through her dress. Hand in hand, we moved around the floor, our bodies moving in rhythm one with the other. While we were dancing, not one word passed between us, because the silence, said it all. The music slowed and softened, and suddenly I found myself molded to her attractive body, the closeness creating energy between us that I've never known.
The contact of her body, I can smell the scent of lilacs coming off her long curvy brunette hair. The dance floor slowly emptied as couples drifted back to their tables, and we are now alone on the floor, completely unaware that we have the floor to ourselves. Finally, we took a break and headed to the bar for more wine, warm from all the dancing but not
noticing it because of the chemistry we have created together. We eventually moved to the snack area, and while chatting and enjoying the finger foods provided, I realize how much I enjoy hearing her laugh. I noticed that she had a bit of crab meat on the edge of her lip. I reached up soft and slowly to wipe it off, her cheeks turned into different shades of scarlet. They were more beautiful then I have seen them on her before.
Not wanting the night to end but knowing that the hour was coming, we made our way back to the dance floor to enjoy what time we had left together. It was like we never left the floor at all. I crave to know what is floating in her beautiful and intelligent mind. Each time I look into her radiant eyes, it is as if I’m looking into them for the very first time. Then realizing time has flown by and we have found ourselves inseparable; finding myself yearning to feel those soft crimson lips against mine and savoring the knowledge of her sweetness and richness to my mind, for eternity.
Wanting to experience kissing her and feel my kisses returned… for I have a mystifying woman in my arms.
