Miles Jacoby, private investigator, has been hired by his friend, lawyer Heck Delgado, to locate a missing prostitute called Two-John Wheeler. Heck needs Two-John to provide an alibi for a mafia client who has been charged with his wife's murder. While on the trail of Two-John, Miles encounters Caroline McWilliams, also a private investigator, but not very good at it. Caroline is looking for her husband's murderer, possibly a serial killer nicknamed The Backshooter. Miles isn't convinced that The Backshooter killed Caroline's husband; he thinks there may be a copycat on the prowl. Still, he is reluctant to get involved with Caroline, who seems to want more from him than his investigative services.
This may be the best of the authors "Miles Jacoby" series.
