ON CHRISTMAS DAY. JOHN III. 16. God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Who can express the joy which a faithful Christian feels on this day; how great his gratitude, how lively his expressions of thanks ? God has indeed never left himself without witness, in that he did good to men; and all times are fit for the celebration of his favour to them. But is any one of them more worthy of our notice than his sending the Saviour into the world ? Religion has consecrated this time to the remembrance of this inestimable benefit. An universal acclamation is this day raised in the Holy Sion. Every where are heard these joyous words: -- " Christ is born for us ; The Son has been given to us." My Christian brethren, we have united ourprayers with those of the universal Church. We have taken part in this holy festival. Let us conclude it by salutary reflections on the grand object which it brings to our remembrance. It is for this purpose that I have chosen the words which you have just heard: words well known for their great importance, and by which the Author of redemption has laid open to us all its mystery: " God so loved the world," he says to us, " that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." In these words are clearly expressed, first, the paternal design of God towards men: it is, " that they should not perish, but have everlasting life."
