Sermons Very Fruitful, Godly and Learned: Preaching in the Reformation, C. 1535-C. 1553
Sermons Very Fruitful Godly and Learned Preaching in the Reformation C 1535-C 1553 Author:Roger Edgeworth, Janet Wilson This edition, published in 1557, is a rare collection of Catholic Reformation sermons consisting of two series: six sermons on the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost and twenty on St Peter's First Epistle. There is also a sermon on thecreed and another on ceremonies. Edgeworth opposed Latimer and his confederacy in the 1530s and suffered persecution ... more »and imprisonment at Wells under Bishop Barlow in Edward's reign. But his career concluded triumphantly for he was Chancellor of Wells Cathedral under Mary I until his resignation from conscience just before his death in 1560.
The rich blend of preaching styles displayed in these twenty eight sermons suggests that Reformation polemicsalso moulded the vernacular along new contours. Edgeworth can lament the passing of bygone glories with poignant eloquence, yet, with all the colloquial vigour that made him a match for Latimer, can denounce heresy with equal fluency.
