Here is Lawrences classic memoir of the Arab revolt in the Middle East during WWI. Considered a classic and, at one time, mandatory reading for officers training in guerilla warfare. But this is more than a memoir; it is a political essay, an anthropology lesson on the multiplicity of the area, and an orientation to its geography and geology as well. Purportedly written from his notes, he must have needed three camels to carry them, and certainly could not have been overly concerned of secrecy. Dont look for details of action though; until the latter part of the book it is as clandestine as their raids. You will find the ennui between operations, the unique logistics of supporting a mobile almost revenant force, the political maneuvering of placating diverse tribes, and the strategy of unconventional warfare. In these are where the details lie. Place name, tribe names and surnames get confusing. Many place names are not shown on the accompanying maps and are not footnoted in the text; thus, it is a task to know to which map one must refer. Lengthy, almost 700 pages. For an abbreviated version read Revolt In the Desert.
