Noelle and Eli's marriage is on the skids, thanks to a difficult period filled with grief over the murder of their daughter. Now, they're sleeping in separate rooms and each one has secrets that would be devastating if they were brought to light. To make things even worse, Noelle develops amnesia after a severe blow to the head, and the past 25 years of her life have suddenly disappeared. Noelle and Eli must now work together to piece their lives back together, and decide whether or not their marriage is worth saving.
Emma Nelson wants nothing more than to recapture the song of her heart. She feels as though it should've been her and not Kelsey that met the end of a shooter's bullet. Since then, playing the music that she and Kelsey created together just isn't the same anymore. If only she could capture the lyrics, the song that keeps running through her head would be complete. It will take a trip back home to Deep Haven, as well as the help of a special friend, to find what's she's been missing all along.
Once again, Susan May Warren has created a masterpiece of a book wrought with deep emotions and personal struggles. Those suffering through a period of grief or those who have strayed from their first love (both literally and spiritually) can find hope in the pages of this novel. The Shadow of Your Smile is not a book to rush through reading, but rather, one that is worth the time it takes to savor the wisdom contained within. Highly Recommended!

Noelle witnesses a crime, has an accident and ends up with amnesia. She doesn't remember the last 25 years of her life- her failing marriage, her kids, the tragedy in their family. Both husband and wife are surprised at things they learn about each other. They are given a chance to find their love again. A subplot revolves around Noelle's son, Kyle, and a friend's daughter, Emma. For a small town, a lot seems to be going on in Deep Haven.
Though this is the fifth book in the Deep Haven series, it can be read as a standalone novel. The storyline was good and wrapped up nicely. I did feel that the family had everything going against them but for the most part, they overcame their struggles in the end.

The Shadow of Your Smile is one of those novels that twines itself around your heart. Its hurting characters and their struggles make you stop and think: what I would do in this kind of situation?
So much history and dynamics play into this family and it shows how one persons bad choices have nearly ruined an entire familys relationships. Noelle and Eli might have been married for years, but after the tragic death of their daughter, they might have been in the same house. But they havent really lived.
Their changing love story impacted me in the heart. I wanted to see them come together. I wanted to see them change. But there was SO much going against them. And when Noelle loses her memory and a gun-toting bad guy, can anything put them back together?
Several times during the book, I held my breath, hoping, hoping that the characters would make the right decisions. Those are the kind of stories that engage the emotions and bring the reader into the story.
There were quite a few subplots (even though everything did tie neatly in the end), it felt a bit quick and Im hoping we can return to a few in future books set in the charming Deep Haven.
Its a novel about relationships. Relationships with our family, loved ones and friends, with God more than anything.
