Neryn is 15 and on the run with her father, Her family was murdered by the king's Enforcers (who "cull" anyone with magical potential). Her father is a gambler and puts her up as collateral. Flint "wins" her and as a result he saves her from the Enforcers who set fire to the gambling boat her father is on. This sets Neryn on a journey to Shadowfell. Shadowfell is home to the rebels who want to free Alban from the (mad) King.
I liked the writing. But I was bored. So bored. I had a hard time connecting with Neryn. She's super young, but does go through a lot of growth throughout the book. It's super in multiple spots and then picks up. It was very uneven. Flint has secrets (major ones). I think you need to be in a certain mood for this one. On the fence about this trilogy, but probably won't read.
