Beyond their personal side, however, "The Sherman Letters" are a running commentary on the events of the time, demonstrating Senator Sherman's aptitude for political persuasion and General Sherman's impetuous, forthright frankness that, all too often, fed his career long battle with reporters and historians. About two-thirds of the letters included are from the years 1861-1877, thus providing a condensed history of the tumultuous years of civil wars and reconstruction.
