The first in an ethralling trilogy detailing the first Punic war, when the great naval power of Carthage rules the seas, preventing supply ships and troop transports from reaching Rome's far flung legions. It becomes clear that a Roman navy must be built and trained to battle both the Cartaginian fleet as well as the host of pirates that prey on Rome's merchant and transport ships. An experienced young Greek captain is trusted with overseeing this great task, while greatly resented by Roman aristocrats and other citizens involved. When he begins to succeed, the animosity grows even more, and is as dangerous as the hatred directed from the enemy. A gripping story of warfare at sea, with the battles and strategies excitingly portrayed.
