I was one of the lucky readers to win an ARC of this excellent book from Goodreads First Reads and I am so glad for the experience. No review is required, but here is my opinion:

This is an outstanding collection of story-telling! I could not put it down until I had read the book all the way through! I particularly enjoyed Blood Knot and Pronghorns of the Third Reich (which has an actual historical photograph included even though the story is fiction). You do not have to be familiar with Joe Pickett to love these stories, but you will want to seek out more if you are not. The most important thing to note about this book is that you need to have some time carved out in your schedule when you pick it up because closing the book will not be an option until the end.

After a brief disappointment that all of the stories aren't about Joe Pickett or Nate Romanowski, I enjoyed a hugely varied collection of suspenseful and surprising tales. In just a few pages, the author takes the reader to other centuries, other continents, and into the twisted minds of some very unusual characters. In general these stories were a good bit darker than Box's usual novels. Short stories usually aren't my cuppa tea, as I prefer more character depth and plot complexity, but Box did a great job of highlighting one or two very human characteristics in each of his main characters, which sustained my interest without a lot of background development.

Stories from Joe Pickett country! The characters are part of Box's usual cast but the writing is a bit different. I'm wondering if he might even be a better short story author than novelist? Thoroughly enjoyed all but one story and will let you guess which one that is. They all had a little twist. Highly recommend this book and don't skip it if you're one of his fans.
