2020 has been such a difficult year that I've spent a great deal of energy reading funny books with lighthearted themes. In fact, this is the 14th Rosenfelt book I've read this year, mainly because of his funny adventures with a variety of 'usual suspects,' also known as Andy Carpenter's sidekicks. However, I'm disappointed in a number of ways.

First, the new lawyer-assistant Andy has hired -- Eddie Dowd. I'm not impressed with the constant reminder that Andy is a sports-buff; I can put up with it because the rest of the book is NOT about sports. However, Andy has hired a former football star and we were inundated with stupid sports references whenever that character is mentioned. Enough, already. Bring back the last guy; he was doomsday incarnate, but he was funny and entertaining. Dowd is not.

Andy is going to have to find a new reason to come out of semi-retirement; I'm tired of seeing that any other character can induce Andy to avoid his profession. Give it up already; it doesn't work anymore.

It was obvious who the bad guy was as soon as 'Donna' talked about her family falling apart. However, the solution was not logical because how did the character earn enough money and have enough clout to do all the things he did without Luther getting wind? I'm not buying the fact that 15 people died in such ways by one person (alone).

I think Rosenfelt needs to separate the characters of his different series. Andy's meetings to hash out cases is getting rather crowded since he includes the characters from his off-shoot series. They don't add anything to Andy's stories about his own cases.

Rosenfelt added more dogs to add to the good-vibes of the story. For those who might wonder if starting at book 22 of this series is a good place to start; it stands alone just fine.
