Fantastic fantasy! It has all/most of the usual elements of an epic fantasy but with some new takes on some old tropes. The main characters were a refreshing surprise that drew me in from the start. Part epic fantasy, part coming of age drama, I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone who loves the genre. N.S. Dolkart's first novel is wonderful.
I do not normally read fantasy books. So when reading this review, keep that in mind.
The story was really good. I was captivated and the character development was masterful.Truly the beginning of the book hooked me instantly. Reading through each chapter with the perspective of different main characters was definitely enjoyable. However, the plot was clunky. It truly was. There were vague points where weeks would pass by in two sentences. Kind of like wave of hand sort of thing. Additionally, it felt like Mr. Dolkart just kind of threw 4 or 5 plot points together and strung them loosely so that it all "wrapped up". It was borderline agitating to go from one problem to another because the story felt so choppy and thrown amateurishly together. But the content was good. So in essence I liked the story, just the flow sucked.
So yeah 3.5 stars for good story, bad flow, and vague interest in the 2nd book.
