Maggie Osborne creates incredibly complex characters and situations.

This book has some of the most agonizing opening chapters I've ever read! I could identify with the anguish Max experienced by not being able to marry the woman he wanted. Low Down/Louise wanted to release Max from marrying her but Max was "a man of honor."

I couldn't imagine getting caught in such a hopeless marriage!
Low Down/Louise didn't seem to have any positive traits; she was filthy, cursed and lacked any understanding of lady-like behavior.

After the marriage, Low Down/Louise begins a metamorphasis into a woman of substance.

Max is a strong presence but he takes his own sweet time recognizing Low Down/Louise's character and value.

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because of Philadelphia. She seemed to have no good qualities. If she was so awful, how and why did Max love her so?
