I read a lot of mysteries and am always looking for something a bit different - this is a series I very much enjoy.

Part of a series that takes place in NC. I really enjoyed the whole series

A great debut novel! The characters are really well-written and likeable and the way that the author blends the mystery with a historic house is excellent!

Being from NC, I enjoyed the attention to detail of the area. Many good and accurate descriptions of NC.

Good read although I found the characters to be a little more interesting than the murder plot itself. Entertaining enough though for me to request the other books in this series.

From Library Journal: "Simon Shaw, Pulitzer Prize-winning history professor at a small, private college in Raleigh, assists police in identifying a body discovered behind an historic house on campus. Although the victim, a young heiress, died in 1926, Shaw feels compelled to find out who killed her. His quest, plus the attentions of a police lawyer interested in the case, pull him out of a depression caused by his recent divorce and departmental politics?but then someone tries to kill him. Although the prose is a bit cut and dried, the Raleigh setting and historic elements should please most readers." Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --

An ok read with some interesting dialogue between some characters. The professor was an ok hero. The writing was fine, but it just felt uncompelling as a story and I don't plan to continue reading the series, which will probably flesh out the relationship that was starting to develop between Simon and the lawyer (although his relationships with his colleagues and the policeman were more interesting.)

What do we have here? An ancient corpse when we were only looking for artifacts - maybe this is part of a missing persons case of long ago. Professor Simon Shaw will investigate.
