This book is the second of three "Seasons of Lancaster" books which follow the same King family. The first was "A Simple Winter" and the third isn't out yet "A Simple Autumn (scheduled Fall 2012). This is the first "Seasons of Lancaster" book I've read and there is no need to read the first book before this as the characters are all very well drawn out and you will get the overall idea of who they are.

"A Simple Spring" starts out with the main character, Sadie King. Sadie is a young Amish girl who is in the midst of her rumspringa. Sadie has a God-given talent of a beautiful singing voice and in the Amish community there's no real way for a woman to share it. While in her rumsprina Sadie has been working in a hotel and she meets her first boyfriend of sorts, Frank while employed there. Frank sees her talent so he asks Sadie to sing for his garage band. Soon Sadie's job performance at the hotel suffers (mainly due to Frank's influence) and she gets fired. Sadie then lies to her brother Adam (the head of her household) and the rest of her family and tells them she is going to work, when she is going to sing with the band instead. She starts to wonder if God is calling her to something other than living Amish. To add to Sadie's confusion during this time she meets Dr. Trueherz's son Mike. She and Mike have a lot in common and they start spending more and more time together. Sadie starts to feel like Mike is her "Big Love", meanwhile Frank starts to show more and more of his true colors. To make matters worse the Amish bishops get wind of Sadie's singing with the band. Will Sadie have the courage to go on the path that she feels God is calling her? How will she know what to do?

There are also a few secondary stories going on during Sadie's confusion. Mike is having his own difficultly choosing his own path in life, as his father is insistent that he take over the family medical practice. Remy (Sadie's soon to be sister-in-law) is becoming inducted into the Amish community so she can marry Adam and Sadie's sister Mary's upcoming wedding.

I really enjoyed this Amish romance. It's not your typical Amish story and the characters are not stereotypical Amish with "perfect" behavior. The characters were all likable and had relatable strengths and weaknesses. This story had a lot of Biblical references and didn't keep from touching on Biblical principals.

The only thing I didn't like in this book was that I thought the ending felt very rushed, when Sadie finally made her decision. Everything else was drawn out well and the ending was just too rushed and quick.

Overall, though I really enjoyed this book and I plan on reading the first of this series and the third. I'm interested to see what else is going to conspire in the King clan.
