Grush does a wonderful job detailing the lives of the first six female astronauts. Starting with a short narrative about each woman's upbringing, she explains their fascination with space and their competitive natures. Her insights and details about the space program in general and how these women progressed provide fascinating reading.
My major exception to the book comes from Grush's insistence on highlighting the lesbian relationships some of the women maintained. She goes so far as to describe intimate details about interpersonal relationships, none of which does she tackle for the heterosexual astronauts. This obsession with the lesbian agenda detracts from an otherwise fine research project.
I also found it interesting that she does not capitalize Air Force and Navy throughout the book. Anti-military bias?
