FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Donna Freedman
It's "skating," dude, not "skateboarding." Crossingham acknowledges that right away in this readable reference, part of the "Sports In Action" series. The author gives loads of basic how-to information, making it a good bet for kids who are interested in skating. Having some idea of the basics might cut down on beginners' bruises. Crossingham talks about protective gear, proper hydration, and warming upbut let's face it: this is an "owie"-prone sport. It's an energetic and highly personal pastime, and the color photos of freestyle tricks are dazzling. Parents who are confused by their children's talk of ollies, grinding, half-pipes or judo air might want to read this the way a traveler reads a foreign phrasebookso they can understand what the heck is going on around them. 2002, Crabtree Publishing Company,
