ISBN 1887942378 - Hooked on Phonics, as a set, turned out to be a surprise for me; my lifelong impression of the program has been changed and I've come to really appreciate the books, in particular. Although the writing is often awkward and stilted, children seem to enjoy the stories too much to notice.
Slam and Dunk are bored when, suddenly, a spaceship crash lands near them. They help Moon Man to fix his ship and he invites them to return with him to the moon. With Mom's permission (of course) and a promise to be home by six, the three take a ride to the moon and play a game of basketball before returning home - on time.
In-house "author" Chris Sawyer's text is just barely average here because it's so stilted (for example: "I am Moon Man. I am from the moon. My ship is stuck. I need to fix it."). Part of the reason for this is the HOP method of teaching, but it makes for a "blah" book in some ways. As a learning tool, however, the book is very good. The text is simple, the font is large and the action is fairly slow-paced without being horribly boring. Illustrator Dennis Hockerman's work is great here. Bright colors and some, but not too much, detail capture the story perfectly without distracting from the text. This book is also part of ISBN 1601438761 Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read K-2 Deluxe.
