Wow! I really loved this story by Ann Gabhart! I have read a couple of her Shaker novels and I just didn't care for them. I guess too many odd and strange doctrines in there. But this one totally caught my attention from page 1 and kept it through to the end. I finished it in one day and had to race and see what happened. It wasn't even mystery or anything and I still had to hurry to the conclusion.
My favorite character was definitely Katie. She has such a strength to her, even though at times I wanted to tell her to loosen up and be human. There are times you just have to let go and cry. Jay I had such compassion for. He really shows that people can be laughing and carefree and yet be covering a ton of hurt. Mike was a great pastor and I felt like he was someone I would like to know in real life. Reminds me of someone I know in fact. And there is the wonderful element of caring and matchmaker in the character of Graham. Don't even get me started on him:) Sweet and loving but wise beyond his years. Oh, and Fern and Birdie? Oh there were so many great characters in this book. I loved them all. Even Alice;)
Overall a good book that shows the terror and troubles of this time in our country. War taking away friends and family members, people in such turmoil. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book. Excellent read Ann!!

I just finished reading Small Town Girl for the second time, this time to my husband as we rode together in the car. We both enjoyed it immensely. Kate is definitely the main character, REAL, with a real love for her family and her God and questions about life and the world. Without giving away the story, I'll say that you need to read it and make your own judgement. I think you'll be glad you did! This follows Angel Sister.
