I have loved this series from the very first book, The Body in the Transept, where we are introduced to Dorothy Martin, a sixty-something expat from Indiana to the fictional town of Sherebury, England. She is a recent widow. Move ahead several years and she is married to the retired Chief Constable, Alan Nesbitt, of their shire and they are on holiday at Alderney Island of the Channel Islands. Right on cue, they discover a dead body. A visiting American Episcopal priest, William Abercrombie has fallen down a steep hiking trail ... or was he pushed? The man seemed to be either loved or loathed. Dorothy and Alan are not really happy whether it was an accident or not so they start to ask questions. The resulting investigation is as intriguing as always. Dorothy is a little older than me, so it is nice to have a protagonist this age that is perceptive and intelligent, not a doddering old fool. She also has a sense of humor about herself and the world in general. Alan is a little older than she is and is a complete dear. He is very calm and British stoic, but very loving and protective of Dorothy. They work well together. The characters she brings into this book are interesting and well thought out. The information on this island is interesting, too. It is only 3 ½ miles long and 1 ½ miles wide and only 8 miles to France. I hope Ms. Dams keeps writing these books for a long, long time!
