What a disappointment, and I usually like Banning's stories. However, this one lacked depth and missed several opportunities to breathe life into a cardboard lead couple. I thought the plot of the independent, career-driven musician who vacillated between her demanding career and her growing love for her newborn niece and late sister's husband--who was also the town doctor--would have been an easy sell, but the storytelling just fell flat. Their many separations became tedious, and I wish more time was dedicated to character development. Furthermore, I thought the mentioning of members from previous books in the Smoke River series was poorly done and left me trying to remember who these people were when instead I should have been happily revisiting old friends. Bleh. Two stars.
