This was one of Beaton's last novels, thus there are only two books in the series. Lady Rose Summer is shunned by London society after a disastrous debutante season. As a result, she's sent to stay at the country home of friends. While there, another female house guest is poisoned. Was it suicide or murder? Then another house guest's lady's maid goes missing. Was she murdered? Lady Rose and Captain Harry Cathcart do some amateur sleuthing, which puts Lady Rose in danger.
I'm a fan of Beaton's Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth. These amateur sleuths didn't quite compare. This is a historical mystery taking place during the Edwardian period and the beginnings of the Suffragette movement. The time period is excellently portrayed. The plot moves fairly quickly. The minor characters are well-developed.
