Combine syrup, sugar & butter in a 2 quart pan. Heat to boil, stir and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and add peanut butter -- mix well in an extra large mixing bowl. Stir in cereal and mix well. Press mixture into a 13x9x2 pan (or a cookie sheet). Press the mixture firmly (I use the bottom of my 1 cup measuring cup to do this.) Melt Nestle semi-sweet chocolate chips as directed on package -- I put them into a microwave safe bowl and microwave them on high for one minute and then stir them and microwave for 10 additional seconds. Now top the bars with the melted chips and smooth it on with a knife or frosting spatula. Refrigerate for about one hour then cut them to desired size before returning them to the refrigerator. This recipe makes 15 large bars.
I first ate these when I discovered them in a little country store in Vermont -- in those days they sold for $1 a piece. It was love at first bite. When I got home I found the recipe on the internet and my family just loves them. They make an excellent snack, or treat and they freeze well!
To make things easier when I make these, I pre-pare the peanut butter into the measuring cups ahead of time and I pre-measure the cereal and lay out my extra large mixing bowl and the pan I'm going to press the bars into. This recipe is super simple though and really good -- I love to take these on trips -- even on the airplane as they are very energizing and yummy!!!!!
