Give out a few words for the Master: The glow of thine ardour shall be Fresh fuel upon the altar, Fresh inspiration, for thee. Give out a few thoughts for the Master, Lest thy heart grow stagnant and still; As thou diggest out fresh channels The Master will surely fill. For fresh are the free running waters, And rich in their deep silent flow; 'Tis the heart that lives for others The joy of true life doth know! What giveth He ? Sweet shrills of joy across the spirit stealing, That echo back each strain of subtle feeling. He giveth light; Ay ! and the glorious power of spirit-seeing, For full expansion of our inner being. And clouds arise, -- True Love-gifts -- though the Giver's face be hidden ; We are hereby to closer union bidden. He giveth peace, -- In softest whispers o'er the spirit stealing, The fulness of a higher life revealing. He giveth tears, -- Wept out in silence on the sleepless pillow; God's breath of balm, upon the stormy billow. Patience He gives; The wave breaks on the beach, its force expended, Yet deems not that its mission here is ended, -- With 'minished powers, True to the tidal call, it comes unswerving; Patience in duty, every power fresh nerving.
