Another in the Arkady Renko series. This time Renko has the thankless job of investigating the preported sightings of stalin in a metro station. In the New russia Stalin has once again become a popular figure. Renko has other problems on his hands, his lover Eva has left him for a war hero that Renko believes is not a hero but is guilty of war crimes, a child he tries to protect runs away and soon someone is trying to kill him. Renko's investigations lead him to Tver where shady entrepreneurs collect bones, weapons and personal effects from slain World War II soldiers who are buried in mass graves. There are many twists and turns as the story moves along filled with dark humor and page turning action.

Smith's downtrodden Russian investigator is back with another grim tale. This is a terrific tale of intrigue, Russian politics, and Russia's past history that was a page turner.
