Deceived is a lead-in to the new video game Star Wars: The Old Republic...and one would think that would make it a weak novel. Not true! The story is actually fast-paced and entertaining!
Deceived takes place on the day when Darth Malgus, an Imperial warlord, leads an attack on the very heart of the Jedi and the Republic...Coruscant itself! The Jedi are murdered and the world held hostage. From there, three entertwining stories spread out and then merge for one great final confrontation. First, there is Darth Malgus, an Imperial who feels that the Sith are becoming weak like the Jedi...and may have to be destroyed. Then there is Zeerid, an ex-Republic soldier-turned Exchange smuggler...who seeks to get enough credits to buy his daughter new legs and then buy back his soul. And finally, Aryn Leneer, a Jedi who wants revenge on Darth Malgus for murdering her master. The Force weaves it's web and brings these three together...to bring about a change in the status quo.
If you're a Star Wars fan, you should read this. We get to see the world thousands of years before the time of Vader and Luke...and even before the time of Darth Bane. It's a world familiar, and different. It's the galaxy of Star Wars at it's height! If you're not a big Star Wars fan, but like sci-fi, it's still a good read. And since this takes place before any of the other books or movies, it's a good starting place to give the whole thing a start...just to see if you like it. At any rate, it's a quick read, and the pacing is fast. You'll not get bored with this book and you don't have to have read fifty books or seen half-a-dozen movies to get into it. A good read.
