There are many reasons why the South lost the Civil War. Not being able to feed its population and its armies is one of the major ones. Mostly this was due to the incredibly stupid agricultural decisions by leaders at the state and national levels.

As a result, many southerners chose to hide food, reduce their production of it, speculate with it to make money and to hell with their cause, plus numerous other effects.

Both southern civilian and military leaders made stupid decisions which affected the feeding and the morale of the population. Just one example... When Vicksburg was besieged by a Union army and staved into submission, when Union troops entered the city they discovered a warehouse stuffed with food that the military commanders were keeping for possible future use.
