Interesting novel, written in 38 short chapters, each one about a character in the book but in different years. They ranged from 1917 to 1974 but weren't in chronological order so it made for a bit of a challenge. When all the pieces fell into place, it made more sense.
Nick was an Army soldier in The Great War (we now call WW I) when he is asked by local farm woman to take care of her new baby and her paintings as she must flee from German soldiers. Nick walks for many miles, finds an abandoned village where he places baby in front of village well. He is full of guilt over leaving the child and in his much later years decides he must find it (now a man almost 60).
The story switches between years, characters, lies and truth. Enjoyable, simple writing, a few sad scenes, a few happy scenes. Overall, a 3.5 star, I rounded up.
