Background The Student Assistance Center first came to exist at East Hartford High School (East Hartford, CT). Working in collaboration with many community organizations and agencies, the school founded its SAC in 1993 to combine multiple services and violence prevention strategies under one umbrella. The SAC encompasses consolidated support and enrichment programs including: · Peer mediation (the centerpiece of its programming) · Drug and alcohol counseling · 12-step meetings · Health services · On-site juvenile probation and police outreach · Social services · Multicultural activities · Programs to help students make college and career choices In addition to crisis intervention, the center offers ongoing individual and group counseling and helps to create an environment in which education and students can thrive.« less
