I've enjoyed the few books I've read in this series. Historical mysteries, set in Victorian London. I like the fact that the "secondary" main character was one of Florence Nightingale's nurses in the Crimean War.
the plot follows a dark and twisting course
In London hospital,Prudence Barrymore,a talented nurse who had once been one of Florence Nightingale's angels of mercy in the Crimean War,meets sudden death by strangulation. Private inquiry agent William Monk is engaged to investigate this horrific crime-which intuition tells him no random stroke of violence by a madman.
Greatly helped by his unconventional friend Hester Latterly, another of Miss Nightingale's nurses, and barrister Oliver Rathbone,Monk assembles the portrait of a remarkable woman.Yet he also discerns the shadow of a reagic evil that darkens every level of society, and a frightening glimmer of his own eclipsed past....
Cliff hanger of a trial, some things one might guess but it is spine tingling how the truth is uncovered.

In the two series that Anne Perry authored, William Monk and Thomas Pitt, she builds the characters and their lives as she delves into their latest mystery which enhances her stories with an added dimension. If you wish to get the most out of her series, here are the Monk books in the order in which they were written: 1990-Face of a Stranger, 1992-A Dangerous Morning, 1994-A Sudden Fearful Death, 1995-The Sins of the Wolf, 1996-Cain His Brother, 1997-Weighed in the Balance, 1998 The Silent Cry, 1998-A Breach of Promise, 2000-The Twisted Root, 2000-Slaves of Obsession, 2001-Funeral in Blue, 2002-Defend & Betray, 2003-Shifting Tide. For historical (Victorian Age) fiction mystery lovers, she is the greatest for a delightful pageturner.
Anne Perry's characters are rich and interesting as is her plot development. I enjoyed this book enough to begin ordering the rest of the Monk series as well as the Pitt series. I particularly enjoy her strong female characters (in both series) - how they negotiate the limitations of the era and push beyond them. Her Monk character is an interesting man, a strong but wounded soul seeking the truth. Highly recommended.
Great William Monk mystery.
Good historical mystery novel!
This book takes place in the Victorian era. Sorry, but not my cup of tea. I didn't read it.
