Trinidad has a unique crossroads heritage - English, Indian, African and all blended to some degree or another but often in conflict sometimes with themselves more than with other cultures. V.S. Naipaul has an ear for dialogue and a rich connection with the community described here. If you think democracy is worth cherishing then pay attention to what happens in this "election" as you may never see it anywhere else.
