Hi! (my 1st ever post) Am a volunteer librarian at a Christian school and am updating its old collection.  Any librarians or teachers among you who can recommend to me must-haves? 

Am looking at the Newberry lists, but am curious if anyone has specifically Christian books they recommend for k to 9th. Thanks!

I would HIGHLY recommend anything by Margaret Peterson Haddix and Bill Meyers. Haddix does not profess to be a Christian but her stuff is wholesome. Myers has the "My life as..." series and it's fun! For the upper grades, I'd recommed Ted Dekker. His story lines can be tense at times, gripping, but not gross or gorey.

Of course, any Bethany House or Tyndale House publishing is GREAT! ummmm, Tracy Peterson, Angela Hunt.... great authors.

As a kid I loooved this bible in the l;ibrary which was done as a comic. It was so much easier to understand and fun to read. I found a few different ones on amazon

Also how about other religious texts? Maybe the Koran? It's interesting to see the similarities and differences between the two religious, growing up I was always interested in other religious and thier belifs.

I suggest the classics as well. I am a teacher at a private Christian school and have my students read most of them by the time they graduate- Old Yeller, Where the red Fern Grows, Great Gatsby, Prince and the Pauper, Scarlet Letter, etc.

 

I was also told about a book called The Word On the Street which is the Bible broken down into present day language for teens.

I'm a middle school reading teacher at a Christian school and our students love anything by Frank Peretti, Ted Dekker, and Terry Blackstock...all Christian authors. Also, A Series of Unfortunate Events are really popular for kids at all reading levels. The Eoin Colfer books are also really popular and so is the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson.

Other random recommendations:

The City of Ember, The Giver, The Cay, Chasing Vermeer, Al Capone Does my Shirts, Models Don't Eat Chocolate Cookies (a really good one for jr. high girls).  Oh, and the True Colors series is really popular here too....the girls love them.

Feel free to PM if you ever need other suggestions. We've been in the process of improving our library as well, so I know what a big task that is.

The Hear Me Read Bible Stories by Mary Manz Simon are a lot of fun and great resources for beginning readers. 

Also, the Degrees of Guilt series is really popular.

Do you have the Left Behind series? Our students love the adult and kid versions of the books. Those are good for boys and girls of all ages. I'm actually reading them now and like them a lot.

The Jesus Storybook Bible is amazing!  It connects all of the Bible stories to the overall story of God's demonstration of love for us by giving us Jesus.

 

I also love Kate DiCamillo books, especially Because of Winn-Dixie.

Sugar Creek Gang series, Boxcar Chilldren, old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys,are all excellent books for 3-6th graders.  

The Advent Book if you can find and afford it, and resurrection eggs with the book  Bengamins Box.
