This was an easy read--while sitting on the beach. However, I never bothered to read the next 2 in the trilogy to find out what happened, so, that says it wasn't that great.

Belly lives for the Summer. To her, the months in between summer are nothing but passing time until the next summer starts. Summer is a time that everything happens, and when Belly is happiest.

Most summer's are the same . Driving down to the beach house with her mother and brother, Steven, swimming at night when she can't sleep, but finally, one summer, everything changes.

When Belly gets to the beach house, the boys she's known forever - Jeremiah and Conrad, who've been her crushes and brother figures all at once - look at her differently. They don't just treat her like one of the guys anymore. Conrad smokes now, and he quit the football team, something that Belly never saw coming. His brother, Jeremiah, is now a jock.

Belly wonders how everything has changed so quickly.

But when things start to change, they eventually end up just as they should have been all along. THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY is a wonderfully written novel that you won't want to put down!

Great teen book. I bought it to give to the local high school ESL class but I read it before donating it. I think the young, 9th grade teens, will like it, too.

After I got past the fact that the main character goes by the name "Belly" and all of the ridiculous nicknames that go along with being called Belly--I found that I really liked the book.

Most girls remember the summer where they turned pretty--where boys started to notice that they weren't girls anymore but turning into women. And it is a very exciting summer. Remembering that summer myself is part of what drew me to this book.

And I wasn't disappointed. Jenny Han does a good job of telling the story and of making the reader really like Belly (despite the horrible name).

But I was a little frustrated at the end. Jenny Han did not make the boys in Belly's life as likable (in my humble opinion). And the one that Belly ends up choosing felt to me like the worst possible choice of all. And I thought that Jenny Han would defend that choice--tell the reader why he wasn't really as bad as we were led to believe. But she didn't. At least not in this installment. So I ended up being a little bit frustrated and dissatisfied at the end.

But I am optimistic that since this is a series that more will come out in the next book to help me understand and accept Belly's choice. Or maybe she will change her mind?

Perfect summer read. Describes first love and growing up accurately. Characters are written so well you can picture having a conversation with them.
