Jake, a veteran with PTSD after deployments has returned to the states but avoiding home where his daughter lives with her aunt and great grandfather on a ranch. While he was deployed his wife was killed in a car accident, He came home from the funeral and returned to his deployment. Now he's bumming around and while in jail after a bar brawl, his wife's grandfather bails him out and offers him room, board, and pay for helping on the ranch. Jake returns to the ranch with him but they don't tell the young girl he's her father. She was so young the last time of the accident and with his beard and new look, she doesnt recognize him. Kira, the girl's aunt is running a program for troubled teens to work with the horses. Jake gets involved helping her with that and more involvement occurs between them. I enjoyed the story. It's not just a romance. His military history, the aunt's troubled teen program, and more raises the bar for this story. I also discovered while browsing other books of this "series" they can actually be read as stand alones. Each one is set in a different state with different characters. I guess the New Americana series aspect is the fact that the series covers different areas of America.
