In frying pan sautee the onion chopped in as much butter as it takes to not burn onion.
while sauteeing onion you can put all of the other ingredients in a pot large enough to hold soup probably larger than 4qt.
Cook over medium heat stirring occasionally once onions are done add to pot and then periodically stir NO NEED TO COVER.
SOUP SHOULD THICKEN UP AS IT COOKS.
