In this story, a writer is researching the history of Spiritualism (seances, mediums, etc.), namely the founders of Spiritualism. Even though she doesn't believe in ghosts, she begins to hear a strange knocking sound in her house. Is it a coincidence or could it be communication from her dead lover, killed in a fire?

This book was WONDERFUL! I like the way that the author melds the present-day with stories of the history of Spiritualism in alternating chapters. I also like how the reader is left to draw his/her own conclusions about events that happen in the story. A must-read for fans of history, ghost stories, romance, and mystery... this book has it all!

Well written and satisfying, it jumps back and forth between the biography being written and the experiences of the author as she deals with her grief and what may be hallucinations.
