My 2 year old loves Swimmy. The message is simple, but valuable: no matter how small the individual, there is strength in numbers and teamwork. The artwork is also very unique as are all of the illustrations in each Lionni book. This one is a keeper.

A Caldecott Honor book.

Swimmy is the only black fish in his school of red fish. One day a tuna comes and eats all the red fish, and Swimmy is on his own. Swimmy discovers all sorts of sea creatures as he swims away to find another red fish family. Can Swimmy help his new family overcome their fear of the big fish?

Ages 3-6 or so.

This is a cute book about how all the little fish work together to act as one big fish. This is an easy reader about a 1st grade level.

A picture book, in which a small fish organizes the other fish in his school to swim in formation so that they look like an enormous fish and frighten away the big fish that would otherwise eat them. Lionni's illustrations of the wonders found in the ocean, made, I think, with different items used as stamps on a colored background, are incredibly beautiful. This book was, deservedly, a Caldecott Medal Honor Book.
