When a friend suggested that he enlist, Benjamin hesitated. He'd intended to study law. But the fight against the British was something monumental. He needed to be a part of it. His conscience wouldn't permit him to stand by.
Benjamin became one of thousands who gave up their careers and dreams to fight for independence. He received his lieutenant's commission on June 20, 1776, and headed to New York to join George Washington's troops and train for battle.
