Set in South Africa, the story is from the perspective of a young girl. It does include some strong language at points, but it is not gratuitous -- but would be inappropriate for a younger audience, even though the reading level is not so advanced. The novel deals with themes of racial relations and discovering a sense of 'home'. It is highly autobiographical, but Pamela Gien says it is not purely so. I first heard of this book when listening to an NPR show, where Pamela Gien was interviewed.

Although this book is not long...I didn't really get into it until almost the end. Some of the language used makes it difficult to read. The story does not flow well. It did not meet my high hopes!
