I am trying to list a book that only has an ISBN 13 code and is not already in the system. My problem is when I input the code the system changes it after 10 or 11 digits are in and automatically puts in an incorrect last 2 digits. I can't get it to "take" the correct code. This is a UK book if that helps. Any help for me ?

The book is the Ghost Orchid by Carol Goodman and the ISBN on the back cover is 9780099468134.

(Further complicating the situation is that the ISBN on the inside info page is different : 9780099468131)

You tried both ISBN#'s?  Because it's a UK book it might have to be listed w/o an ISBN.

Yes I tried both ISBN's but thought it was weird that they were slightly different.

As long at the ISBN-13 starts with 978 (979 is starting to be used on some international books), you can convert it to an ISBN-10.

The process is that you strip the leading 978 and then calculate a new check digit (which is the last digit in the number).

There are online calculators that will do this for you, one is at http://pcn.loc.gov/isbncnvt.html

Alternatively, you could post the book as if it didn't have an ISBN.

You should be able to post your book using 9780099468134. I just pasted this into the Post Books screen, and it turned green, indicating that it is an ISBN. 9780099468131 is not an ISBN. It is impossible for two ISBNs to be exactly the same except for the last digit. If you know the first 12 digits, then it is possible to calculate the last digit, and in this case, that digit calculates out to 4. The 1 must be a typo.

Since this ISBN is not a US number, then when you post it to PBS, you get the "please enter more info" screen. You'll have to manually type the title, book size, etc.

Hmm.... one thing you could try, and I have had luck with this. Do a SEARCH for the 13 digit ISBN and see if it brings anything up. Sometimes it will bring up the book when you search for the 13 digit ISBN, and if so just click post this book.

Another thing I have done in the past that also seems to work: Go to your TBR pile and click Add Book toTBR. Enter the 13 digit ISBN there and sometimes it will bring up a page to let you enter the book data with the correct ISBN and it will fill in the 10 digit ISBN code for you.

9780099468134 is the correct ISBN for the UK PB version of the title. If you go to POST books, and input this, you will get the screen asking for the rest of the info for the book. Have a ruler handy, but you can open a window to the US version to get much of the rest of the info. You will probably have to input a dif publisher, but you can grab the title, author, & description from the other window rather than having to type it all over.
