Those who enjoyed Somewhere in Time will relate to the events in this story. The only elements found in both events are two people that fall in love, two periods in time, the determination to be together some way or some time, and the addition of an apparition that follows Donald around. A little oak table mysteriously appears in the kitchen of an old house given to Donald Haldren by his aunt, and thirty minutes to an hour later, this table disappears. A hot cup of coffee appears on it; he later discovers that this coffee is 135 years old. This table becomes a way to communicate with people living in this same house in the year 1871. Through this means of communication, Don meets and falls in love with Laura Hyman, a schoolteacher in 1871. Laura lives in Hyman Corners, a small community that existed in 1871 but had dissolved by 2006. These two lovebirds overcome several obstacles in pursuing a romance across 135 years as they travel back and forth across a little oak table that originates in 1871 but can be seen in the year 2006 but for only a short time and on sunny mornings. The paved streets that are present at this location during 2006 change to dirt or brick roads in 1871. They are married in Hyman Corners in 1871. Don returns home a week after the wedding with Laura to follow a week later. Before Laura can join her husband, someone steals the oak table. This table is the only link between Laura s time and the present. The situation gets worse two months later when Laura discovers she s pregnant. She is one hundred and thirty-five years from her husband with no way to reach him. Don is convinced he ll never see his wife again. Myrtle Handsome, a woman once engaged to Don, show up on the scene. She tries various ways to seduce him, and may have succeeded if not for his religious beliefs and the fact he found the table from the past in a flea market. Turning to look over the display knives, which were lying on a white linen cloth, he noticed the table being used for the display. This looked like his table from the past!
