I read this as a book club read, suggested by a person who read it and found it and it's two sequels interesting. It took me a little while to get past all the sadness that seemed to be going on throughout the first third of the book. But the story was excellent, and I was always looking forward to seeing what was going to happen next. The story moved from the impoverished streets of England to the streets of New York paved with gold. Star crossed lovers, a woman with ambition back in the days when it was frowned upon, and devotion from families not necessarily related by blood. All in all, a wonderful story. Looking forward to the two other books by this author!
