Can anyone tell me if Ted Dekker's Martyr's Song series have to be read in order or can they stand alone?

I'm pretty sure they can stand alone. At least, my mom read them and wanted me to read the second one, said I didn't need to read the first one first. ;-) Hopefully someone who has read them will post for you!

They can stand alone. Read When Heaven Weeps first. It is, hands down, one of the best books I've ever read. You will feel the Lord's love shining through to you. It's truly amazing. :)
